The Suya Spot: Canada’s Number 1 West African BBQ Restaurant

Popularized by Nigerian street food vendors who set up carts in trendy nightlife districts, Suya is a West African culinary style you can enjoy today from The Suya Spot at the Newmarket Plaza. Since 2006, The Suya Spot has been serving delicious beef, chicken, gizzard, and goat BBQ dishes with tasty sides like traditional Jollof rice, fried plantain and yam, crispy fries, fresh garden salad, and Nigerian yellow fried rice.

Tasting the Suya Difference in Newmarket

The Suya Spot blends West African cuisine with a casual and friendly atmosphere that reflects the spirit of community. Our restaurant features modern Nigerian chic decor, and you can order online for takeout or delivery through Skip the Dishes or Uber Eats. We aim to welcome our Newmarket neighbours into the Suya Nation, a foodie community that appreciates key ingredients like the Yaji spice rub, kuli-kuli peanut paste, ground ginger, cayenne pepper, and others.

Our meat cuts are thinly sliced before grilling them over charcoal flames, allowing the spice rub to penetrate every fibre. Iconic dishes like Stick Meat and Goat Suya are skewered for a more authentic Nigerian street food experience. Our crispy fries are tossed in a finer version of Yaji rub before they are double-fried, and our fried yams are soaked in seasoned water before cooking them in aromatic oil with garlic and onions.

No West African restaurant would be complete without Jollof rice on the menu; at The Suya Spot, we prepare it with tomato paste and scotch bonnet peppers for a smoky and spicy flavour profile. We strongly recommend fried plantain and crispy fries as side dishes to pair with a mixed Suya platter. If you want to taste something different, we prepare Nigerian yellow fried rice with long parboiled grain, curry powder, turmeric, carrots, green beans, and peas for an aromatic, healthy, and savoury dish.
