Welcome to Or Hadash, a Reform Judaism synagogue for the gantze mishpacha. Our congregation welcomes all Jewish faithful from all backgrounds. If you appreciate the concept of Tikkun Olam, which calls upon us to make the world a better place, Or Hadash is where you can find spiritual guidance in a warm atmosphere.
Or Hadash means “new light.” In the context of Reform and Progressive Judaism, our congregation supports and upholds the principles of renewal and hope. We celebrate our ancient religious heritage with love, understanding, dignity, and respect for all Jewish faithful. We do this through worship, Hebrew School, adult education, Yizkor services, social action, and community outreach.
Participatory Judaism has always been at the heart of our congregation. We began with a tiny Hebrew School in the early 1990s. A few years later, we opened our first synagogue in the York region, and we eventually moved into larger spaces to accommodate our growing congregation. We’ve been at New Market Plaza since 2017; this is where we hold Shabbat services, study sessions, social activities, and special events. We can be your partner in celebrating life events according to our faith, from Brit Bat to Brit Milah through your Nissuin nuptials.
As an egalitarian and ecumenical synagogue, Or Hadash welcomes the frum and the non-practicing alike; in fact, many in our congregation are from interfaith families. Our services are open to all faithful, so the Torah readings are in English and Hebrew. All prayers have corresponding translations, and our dear members are fond of guiding newcomers through the prayer book.
Our mission to shine a new light under the principles of Reform Judaism moves our congregation towards inclusion. We believe in the tenets of our faith and their expansion in our communities. If you are interested in learning about the Jewish faith, you are welcome to visit our synagogue.
